Class 1 Topics - Summer 2017

Here are the topics Class 1 will be covering over the summer term.

Communication and Language (Reception)
The children will have lots of opportunities to listen to others and show understanding whilst they share their Easter diaries this term and when they share their Learning Journals with their family in the second term. They also have the opportunity to listen in the listening corner, to listen to their friends in their play, to listen to stories daily, to learn songs and rhymes and to take part in role play. Also the children have enjoyed telling the class about activities they have been doing outside of school, so please continue to try to send in a WOW post-it each week.
Literacy (Reception)/ (Year 1)
In the first half term the children will be exploring traditional tales with the main focus being on the traditional tale Cinderella. We will do a lot of speaking and listening activities based around it, this will also involve reading and writing.  In the second half of the term the children will be exploring poetry. All children will continue with their daily Letters and Sounds activities.
Physical Development (Reception)/Physical Education (Year 1)
The children will be learning skills for team games and getting prepared for the Sports Day activities. They will learn the importance of sportsmanship. They will be continuing to handle and use a wide range of equipment and they will be thinking about the changes in their bodies when they have been exercising.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development (Reception)/PSHE (Year 1)
The children will be looking at recognising positive things about themselves and to continue to complete their Legacy challenge. They will also focus on celebrating their differences, discussing what it means to be kind to others, explore friendships - thinking about the skills needed to be a good friend, and discuss feelings.
Mathematics (Reception)/(Year 1)
The Reception children will be counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, ordering numbers, writing the numbers 1-20, solving addition and subtraction number sentences, sharing, doubling, halving,  and problem solving. They will also explore money, time, position, distance and capacity. The Year 1 children will be learning about time, money, fractions, measure and geometry. They will continue to learn the four basic operations and use these for problem solving.  The focus will be on place value and times tables.
Expressive Arts and Design (Reception):
The children will be exploring and experimenting with different media and materials, and will be encouraged to use their imaginations in different ways; crafts, music, dance, role play and stories.
(Music Year 1) The topic this term is Pulse and Rhythm.
(Design and Technology Year 1) The children will design and make a package for a pot that they made in the spring term.
(Art Year 1) The children will be exploring patterns in nature.
Understanding of the World (Reception)/(Year 1 Science)
The children will continue growing and caring for plants throughout the summer term. They will also be exploring mini-beasts and their habitats in the local environment. In the class we are hoping to hatch some chicks and observe the life cycle of a butterfly.
Understanding of the World (Reception)/(Year 1 ICT)
The children will learn about internet safety and the role of information technology in school and around the home.
Understanding of the World (Reception)/(Year 1 History)
The children will be exploring the history of flight.
Understanding of the World (Reception)/(Year 1 Geography)
The children will compare Kenya to Norfolk, comparing key physical and human features.
Understanding of the World (Reception)/(Year 1 Religious Education)
The children will be learning about Jewish family life, exploring their beliefs and thinking of festivals specific to Judaism.
