Autumn 2015 Topic Letter

 

 
Dear Parent/ Carer,
 
I would like to take this opportunity to let you know what topics Class 2 will be covering throughout the Autumn Term.
 
Literacy: In literacy the children will be learning and writing fiction about Fantasy stories and studying stories by the same author. The author we will be reading is Julia Donaldson, so if the children have any of these books at home and would like to bring them to school please make sure they are named and you agree to other children reading them. Non-fiction work will be Lists and Labels, followed by Explanation texts. In addition the children will be reciting and writing poems relating to their senses.
 
Numeracy: This term the children will be looking at basic number and learning some mathematical vocabulary. They will have lots of opportunities to use practical equipment to solve problems and we will also be looking at patterns and relationships between different aspects of mathematics. We will also be learning to recall the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
 
Science:  The first topic this term is Everyday Materials when the children will look at properties of materials and their uses. They will learn about floating and sinking. After half term we will look at seasonal change from autumn to winter.  
 
Art: Art will be covered for the first half term. Our topic is Self-portraits.  The artist Eric Carle will be studied during the course of the whole academic year.
 
Design and Technology:  The children will be doing design and technology after half term and they will be making a moving picture to fit in with Mechanisms and structures.
 
Cookery:  The theme for cookery is fruit and the children will make seasonal jam. They will need a small glass lidded jar in order to take the jam home; the children will be reminded nearer to the time this is needed.
.
Music: The children will be exploring pitch.
 
PE: The children will be learning skills to help them to participate in striking and fielding games. They will learn different sending and receiving skills and basic tactics.   Please remember to remove any earrings on Monday and Friday and also to include a spare jumper and trousers as we move into autumnal weather.
 
PSHE: The children will learn about developing confidence which is linked to Show and Tell.
 
RE:  This term is dedicated to learning about stories from the New Testament. They will hear and learn stories about Jesus as well as stories He told. They will also learn about Harvest and Christmas celebrations.
 
History/ Geography: Before half term we will learn about the Great Fire of London and Remembrance Day. After half term the children will learn about the UK.
 
Computing: The children will learn the term algorithm and begin to develop an understanding of writing their own.
